William Hervie Dobson amassed a wonderful collection of
Photographs that I had the pleasure of keeping up with for a period of time after his son,
Hervey Alden Dobson died.
I corresponded with a German man (Thomas Hahn) about these
glass plate slides. He lived in New York while we lived in Baarn, Netherlands. Then when
we moved to Georgia, he moved to Germany. Then he came back to NY and wanted to meet me
half way and see some of the slides. I could not find time to go and meet with him.
I put a few of them on this site:
click here to see how I did.
Mr. Hahn went on to work at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He became (I think)
the curator for East Asian Studies at the Library.
Thomas contacted me again several
years ago and asked me to send the slides to the Library. I sent around 240 slides of
different dimensions. It looks like they used 215 images from the collection. I am
very pleased that now many more people can see and appreciate the photographs that Hervey
kept for years and then I hauled around for years.
I am so happy that there was some research done to tie all of this together. I sent all
of the documentation that I could come up with and filled in all of the gaps that I could
about the hospital and mission in Yeung Kong etc.... I think Thomas (or someone at the
university) did a great job of restoring the images. I tried to reproduce them myself but ended
up spending an inordinate amount of time on a project that would have taken much more time
and more money than I had to invest.
I hope that all who view these wonderful glass slides, now and in the future, enjoy them
as much as I did while I had them.
Let me know what you think.
I think you will be proud to see and read what you find. Click here
and once at the site, at the top of the page, click "Search The Selection". Then, at the bottom right of the next page, click, "Browse The William Hervie Dobson Collection".
You can click on each image to see an enlarged image and more information about each slide. At the bottom right corner of each page click the next number- 13, 25, etc...
